1. DISCOVERING THE STORY BEHIND CHIKANKARI
The tradition of Chikankari can be traced back to the Mughal era where it was popular among the Royal and was seen as a symbol of luxury because it was mainly worn by the Kings and the Queens.
According to some, the ‘Chikankari’ embroidery was brought to India by Nur Jehan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir who was a skilled embroiderer.
Later in the 18th and 19th century during the reign of Nawabs of Awadh, the technique of Chikankari gained popularity; the Nawabs promoted and helped preserve this art work. With time, the art of Chikankari evolved, and this heritage craft passed down from one generation to another.

2. EXPLORING CHIKANKARI TECHNIQUES
There are different types of Chikankari stitches with Phanda, Jaali, Murri, Bakhia, and Tepchi being the most famous ones.
Phanda, a millet shaped stitch and Murri, a rice shaped stitch are used to embroider the centre of flowers.
Jaali stitch is another unique form of embroidery stitch where the thread is not pulled through the fabric, ensuring a flawless finish on the back and front of the fabric.
Teptchi is a running stitch used to create a baseline on the right side of fabric. It uses 6 strands of thread over 4 threads, picking up one resulting in the formation of a line.
Bakhiya, famously known as the ‘shadow stitch’ is done on the reverse of the fabric, using the herringbone stitch technique.
Hool is the embroidery technique that creates a detachable aperture in the fabric. The technique includes piercing a small hole in the fabric and teasing apart the threads. At SAPPHIRE, we blend machine-based embroidery to produce stunning and intricate designs that are long-lasting and prove to be cost-effective for the costumer!
Traditionally, chikankari was done using a white thread on fine muslin cloth known as ‘malmal’. At SAPPHIRE, we use dobby fabric for chikankari which is best known for its durability, wrinkle resistance, and easy care. The fabric is made from synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon to increase durability and resistance to damage.

3. STYLING CHIKANKARI PIECES
a) The Traditional Way
For a traditional look, pair SAPPHIRE’s Chikankari dress with an embellished Kohlapuri or a tan faux leather khussa based on your personal choice from SAPPHIRE’S Traditional shoes collection. Pair the shirt with an off-white salwar design instead of a straight trouser design for a more traditional and comfortable look . Add an embroidered, multi-coloured clutch to elevate the look. Complete the style with some silver and white pearl jhumkas from a local shop. Finally, for an effortless look go for soft, relaxed curls.
b) The Modern Way
Alternatively, for a modern look, pair your dress with a straight trouser design and elegant flats or heels to add a touch of glamour to your outfit. SAPPHIRE’s beige strappy block heels or weaved flat shoes would match the outfit perfectly.
Add a spacious and compact light pink tote bag from SAPPHIRE’s accessories to elevate your fashion style. If you prefer a pop of colour, go for a maroon leather tote bag from the same collection. Complete the look with some minimalistic golden hoops and bracelets, and a soft blow-dry!
